Sapphire is the modern birthstone for September, both in the United States and Britain. Long before the gemstone became the modern September birthstone, sapphire was the planetary stone for Libra, while blue sapphire is a zodiac stone for Virgo, both zodiac signs falling partly in the month of September.
Sapphire is precious corundum occurring in colors other than red, which would otherwise be called ruby. This birthstone of September is a highly valuable gemstone, and has accordingly remained among the 4 precious stones of the modern day. While the gemstone is available in a variety of colors, the color of sapphire popularly regarded as the September gemstone is the blue sapphire.
