Topaz
Topaz is coherently reflected in the old calendars as the birthstone for Sagittarius. This Sagittarius birthstone is the traditional birthstone for the month of November in the ancient calendars — Hebrew, Arabic, Italian, Polish, Roman, Russian and Indian (Ayurvedic) — and remains the November birthstone in modern Western gemology. The Sagittarius gemstone is also the birthstone for December in the contemporary Hindu calendar. Furthermore, topaz, being the stone associated with the zodiac sign’s ruling planet, Jupiter, is the planetary stone for Sagittarius. Indeed, consistent records exist that identify topaz as the gemstone for Sagittarius.
In the Middle Ages, the name topaz used to apply to any yellow gemstones, including citrine. Today, however, topaz refers to a group of transparent silicate minerals, which occur, not only as yellow stones, but also orange, red and even blue. The variety of topaz traditionally identified as the birthstone for Sagittarius is the golden or yellow topaz. The Sagittarius birthstone, yellow and clear, embodies optimism, which in Sagittarius-born people is possibly boundless. Besides bringing in growth and prosperity, this Sagittarius stone is also believed to increase strength, improve eyesight, and protect its wearer from injury.
Peridot
While tradition designates topaz as the birthstone for Sagittarius, the topaz of the ancient was, not actually the true topaz, but peridot. Named after the island whence it came, topaz, or topazius, is described by 1st century writers as a greenish gemstone from the island of Topazos in the Red Sea. This description perfectly fits peridot, a green gemstone extracted from Topazos, now known as St. John’s Island, which remains an important source of rough peridot to this day.
Called the “gem of the sun,” peridot is believed to chase away bad thoughts to the point that the person wearing it is never suspected of evil doings. An enemy of natural fear, the Sagittarius birthstone renders it wearer optimistic, gracious and friendly. Peridot indeed echoes the fiery qualities of the good-natured Sagittarius, and sustains the virtues of the zodiac sign, keeping the Sagittarian good, trusty and sociable. See also —
